Every day, I find out about a new brand I should be boycotting for one reason or another. It’s hard to keep track of the list of human rights and environmental offenders. Especially since fashion is often produced far away from clothing brand headquarters, giving retailers minimal insight into harmful work conditions.

Even when brands aren’t using child labor or sweatshops, fashion production is a major harm to the environment in terms of production resources, transportation, over-consumption, and then over-donation. (There is more donated clothing than people who need it. Over-donation has a major negative impact on the environment in the United States and developing countries.)

A Roundup of the Good Guys

Instead of creating an infinite list of bad actors to vilify, I wanted to draw attention to some of the good guys when it comes to sustainable fashion.

These are 50 children’s fashion brands that care about ethical production and consumption of their clothing. They produce goods responsibly in a closed-loop system. Their garments are not meant to be worn sparingly for one season before being donated or trashed.

Garments from these 50 brands are meant to be worn extensively, before being handed down. Many offer used garment resale programs and free lifetime repairs.

These brands use responsible materials (GOTS organic cotton, recycled textiles, bamboo, modal, linen, and other low-impact materials) and ethical production methods.

I’ve made note of all brands that are Fair-Trade certified (for fair working conditions). Many brands featured do not have this designation because there isn’t one globally recognized standard. Different brands adhere to different ethical work condition codes of conduct and have different oversight processes.
