What is Misha and Puff?
Misha and Puff is slow fashion, stylish, long-lasting, and expertly crafted.
Anna Wallack founded the company in 2012 after she knit her first newborn clothes. At the time, knitted newborn essentials were not widely available in the children’s market. Her small-scale knits caught on quickly and evolved into a luxury clothing company that sells worldwide.
If there was a brand that was opposite of fast fashion, it would be Misha and Puff. They take great pride in slowing down and perfecting their craft of knitted garments and accessories that are fashionable, yet unfussy. They want their items to be long-lasting and thoughtfully manufactured.
Why is Misha and Puff so expensive?
Misha and Puff create heirloom quality pieces not only for children but future generations. They use high-quality materials, responsible sourcing, and responsible production practices to ensure their products are not harming the earth, animals, or people.
Misha and Puff pieces are hand-knitted and hand-crafted by artisans in Peru (the knitting capital of the world). Misha and Puff is passionate about fair trade, which includes paying fair wages, using sustainable resources, and supporting local communities where factories are based. To ensure fair labor wages are paid to workers, the price of the item reflects the quality pieces of Misha and Puff.
Misha and Puff knitters are paid regularly and on time. They have control over how much they work and when they want to work. This flexibility allows many knitters to be at home with their children while making a reliable income. They also have input into what they get paid and many knitters work year-round. This isn’t necessarily typical in the garment and fashion industry where there are usually two seasons (spring/summer and fall/winter). Misha and Puff create more frequent drops throughout the year to keep their knitters with steady work, year-round.
Is Misha and Puff yarn organic?
Misha and Puff’s organic Pima cotton is sourced from a family-owned company in Peru that has been in the production and promotion of organic cotton for over 30 years. Pima cotton has a longer fiber than traditional cotton. This makes for a softer and more durable weave which gives the garment the ability to last a lifetime.
Organic cotton reduces water consumption by 91% compared to conventionally grown cotton.
Currently, not all Misha and Puff cotton is organic. Only their “cut and sew” products use 100% organic Pima cotton, which is noted on the product pages.
Is Misha and Puff sustainably made?
Yes. Misha and Puff pride themselves on being sustainable.
Misha and Puff use low-impact dyes (which absorb better into the yarn, which means less water is needed during the rinse process) and plant-based dyes in their hand-dyed wool yarn. Artisans dye the yarn with their hands, turning and manipulating it while making every piece of yarn unique and unlike any others.
They also use a responsible wool program where they consider multiple factors to ensure it aligns with the company’s ethics. In the program they consider animal welfare (the sheep), land management (the pastures), and social welfare (the workers and local communities).
Their responsible wool program complies with the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) and Fair Trade principles. Misha and Puff are constantly working towards no-waste and always looking for ways to improve sustainability.
What is the Misha and Puff popcorn sweater?
The popcorn sweater is their iconic garment and what people usually think of when you mention Misha and Puff. The popcorn sweater doesn’t actually include popcorn to eat, but rather it’s the type of stitch on the garment. It creates little balls all over the yarn, which look like little pieces of popcorn.
