All About Burt’s Bees Baby

Burt’s Bees was established in 1980 by Maine-based Burt Shavitz (a beekeeper) and Roxanne Quimby as a nature-conscious brand devoted to building a healthier world. The root of their brand lies in the fundamental belief in spreading good through kindness, thoughtfulness, and awareness.

In 2012, The Burt’s Bees team noticed a gap in the baby market for affordable, organic clothing that was timelessly stylish and of high quality. They wanted clothing that could be passed down and safer for little ones. With a small, but passionate team on a mission to create something meaningful, Burt’s Bees Baby was born.

What is Burt’s Bees Baby?

Burt’s Bees is a baby and children’s company that focuses on organic garments and products for kids. Their goal is to not only produce organic clothing but to get other baby apparel companies to make the switch to organic and start an organic revolution.

The foundation of the company is to always do the right thing. They work tirelessly to find factories that plant trees instead of tearing them down, and recycle their water supply to lessen the impact on the planet. They want to find factories that generate their own energy needs with solar panels and wind turbines to reduce their environmental footprint.

The Burt’s bees team supports local communities through volunteer work and product donations. They also partner with charities on a national level to help fund and support disaster relief initiatives.

Do Burt’s Bees Baby clothes run big?

Yes.

According to various reviews, Burt’s Bees Baby clothing runs big depending on the style. It is always good to read reviews if you’re unsure about sizing. You can call 855-540-2229 with additional product or sizing questions.

Do Burt’s Bees clothes shrink?

Yes.

Since their products are 100% cotton and are not pre-shrunk, they may experience some shrinkage. It is important to follow the product care instructions:

  • Machine wash warm
  • Only non-chlorine bleach when needed
  • Wash with similar colors
  • Tumble dry low, except on sweaters which should be dried flat
  • Gentle cycle

Following the product care instructions on all garments should decrease the chance of significant shrinkage.

Is Burt’s Bees cruel to bees?

No.

Burt’s Bees has supported sustainable agriculture and pollinator forage projects through its foundation since 2007. As part of their #BringBackTheBees campaign, they also planted 1 billion wildflowers for the bees with help from the Rural Advancement Foundation International.

Burt’s Bees is cruelty-free and certified by Leaping Bunny and PETA. They source most of their beeswax from Africa, where the company works with local beekeepers who use both modern and traditional methods to supply the wax.

Do Burt’s Bees have forever chemicals?

Possibly.

PFAS is short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, which are known to be harmful to humans. Another name for these are forever chemicals. They are the most persistent synthetic chemicals, hardly degrade in the natural environment, and have been found in the blood and breast milk of people and wildlife all over the world.

There is currently a 42-page lawsuit that alleges Clorox Company and the Burt’s Bees Products Company have advertised several of their products to be “consciously crafted with ingredients from nature,” “over 95% natural origin” and “Kind to Skin & Planet” without warning buyers that they contain PFAS.

Burt’s Bees states that the “Products are safe and effective for their intended use, and reasonable consumers expect that cosmetic Products marketed and sold to be applied to a person’s face and skin, and especially near the eyes and on lips, will not contain dangerous, humanmade [sic] chemicals like PFAS”. More information about the lawsuit can be found here.

How ethical is Burt’s Bees? Is Burt’s Bees organic?

A pending lawsuit is rarely good for business, especially when the foundation of said business is safety and sustainability for your family. It can be hard to regain the consumers’ trust.

However, despite pending lawsuits, Burt’s Bees does have several environmentally friendly practices.

  • Soy-based ink on their packaging
  • They use buttons and threads using recycled materials.
  • GOTS-regulated printing and dyeing techniques.
  • Factories repurpose the silt waste to make bricks which are used to build homes and buildings
  • For every ten bodysuits, they save six plastic water bottles from the landfill
  • Each bodysuit saves 56 gallons of water due to organic cotton being used

Burt’s Bees is committed that “every drop counts” and utilizes small changes to make a significant impact.
