June and January is a high-end children’s clothing line that believes kids are fun and their clothes should be too. With bright colors and bold prints, the line is perfect for modern babies, toddlers, and kids.
In 2020, they added non-clothing items from other wholesale brands to their website. This was directly due to the COVID-19 pandemic when the brand needed to get creative to keep their digital doors open. They realized they could sell unconventional items that kids could do at home during shelter-in-place orders.
The brand donates percentages of sales at different times to different organizations. They also regularly donate their returns and clothes to schools.
What is June and January?
June and January was founded in 2010 at a kitchen table in Brooklyn, New York under the name Little Hip Squeaks. Founder and CEO, Amy Richardson-Goilia started the company when she was pregnant with her first son, Eli. Due to being on bed rest, she was bored and looking for baby clothes online. She could not find anything that wasn’t overly cute and in solid colors.
One day, she decided to use her old 4-H skills and sewed a baby hat. She decided to keep sewing, where she took 50 hats to a baby show and sold out. She started an Etsy store where she sold anywhere from 10 to 15 per day.
Fast forward to 2018 and the brand shipped over 200,000 units of baby, toddler, and children’s wear in more than 4,000 sizes, styles, and color combinations.

Who owns June & January?
Amy Richardson-Golia is the owner and founder of June and January. She is a graduate of the University of Buffalo, majoring in arts and communication. She had previous experience working in the production departments at Teen Vogue and Allure.
She started June & January as a side gig when she was pregnant with her first son. 11 months after she made her first hat, she quit her job to focus on her brand full-time.
What originally started as Little Hip Squeaks in Brooklyn, New York has now morphed into June and January (named after the birth months of her children) with operations in Austin, Texas. The name change was to take her business to the next level and have a more “grown-up” tone.
They currently have 12 employees and are primarily a woman-run company.
What sizes does June and January carry?
June and January carry sizes 2 years to 12/14 years. Their baby line is primarily hats and blankets.
What makes June and January unique?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company was facing very uncertain times. Since their clothing is manufactured in China, they had a tough time getting their spring release apparel due to factories being shut down.
With quick thinking, they pivoted to a couple of different strategies that paid off. They contacted a cut-and-sew factory they’d previously used in Utah to get as many items made as they could. They ended up with around 750 units for their spring/summer 2020 launch, which immediately sold out. This strategy generated a bit of revenue. But they still needed other ways to boost cash flow and ensure they stayed afloat during uncertain times.
During this time, Richardson-Golia and Linsey Watts, June and January partner and chief marketing officer, gave up their salaries to ensure they did not have to lay off any of their 12 staff members.
When brainstorming ways to increase revenue, they decided to buy non-clothing items wholesale and sell them on their website. They buy small batches of different items (usually around 20 units at a time) and sell them on their website. A lot of their items are kid-focused crafts, party supplies, school supplies, and more.
Why is June and January so popular?
June and January is popular because both moms and kids love the brand. The clothing features soft cotton-spandex blend material that can be mixed and matched with other items. Other non-clothing items like backpacks, water bottles, and school supplies, make June and January a one-stop shop for back-to-school shopping.
The brand was surprised at the demand for toys and other non-clothing items from a clothing brand known for stylish kids clothing, but they plan to keep the non-apparel items around. The brand aims to make it as easy as possible to get all your kids’ clothing and accessories in one place.
Is the June and January backpack good quality?
June and January carry several brands of backpacks on their website. The State rainbow sequin backpack is adorable for a girly girl or the State lightning bolt backpack for a rad little dude. The great thing about State brand backpacks (which is a brand carried by June and January), is not only the quality but the mission behind the brand.
State is on a mission to make beautiful, well-made, inclusively cool products while using the power of business to give back and shift narratives around social injustices. For every State bag purchased, they’ll support American children and families in need.
